Anxiety and stress, on the map

Almost every anxious thought answers two questions the same way: when is it about? Something that has not happened. How does it feel about it? Badly. On the map that is Future + Dislikes (worry), and it is the position most of us visit most. The posts below start with what anxiety is on the map, then the mornings, the stress with no reason, the overwhelm, and the ways back to calm, including the one that works without trying: a body that is busy.

These posts describe a mechanism. They are not a diagnosis and not a treatment. If anxiety has become constant, or comes with low mood lasting two weeks or more, please talk to a doctor.

The PAHM matrixA three by three grid. Time runs across as Past, Present and Future. Emotional charge runs down as Likes, Neutral and Dislikes. Present and Neutral, the stable centre, is marked, and so is the Future + Dislikes position. The remaining positions are shown plainly, with no emphasis.PASTPRESENTFUTURELIKESNEUTRALDISLIKESPast+ Likes(Nostalgia)Past+ Neutral(Memory)Past+ Dislikes(Regret)Present+ Likes(Holding)Present+ Neutral(Presence)Present+ Dislikes(Resistance)Future+ Likes(Anticipation)Future+ Neutral(Planning)Future+ Dislikes(Worry)

  1. What anxiety actually is, structurallyAnxiety is attention held in the future while carrying dislike. Not a mood, not a flaw in temperament. A position, and positions can change.
  2. Why am I always anxious? Anxiety that has become a habit of positionWhy am I always anxious, even when nothing is wrong? Because a position held often enough becomes a disposition. Habits of attention can be unlearned.
  3. Why do I wake up anxious? The first thought of the dayWhy do I wake up anxious? Before your senses report anything, the mind can produce a first thought already charged and already in the future.
  4. Why do I feel stressed for no reason? The reason is a thought you did not see arriveWhy do I feel stressed for no reason? Some thoughts arrive already charged, with nothing in front of you to start them. The reason is real; it is not present.
  5. Why do I feel overwhelmed? Many chains, one momentWhy do I feel overwhelmed? Not the list itself, but attention switching fast between a dozen thought chains. The present only holds one next thing.
  6. How to stay calm: you return to calm, you do not hold itHow to stay calm when life pushes? Not by holding calm tight, which is its own tension. Calm is where attention rests when it stops pushing and pulling.
  7. Why does exercise reduce stress? The relief is attention being forced into the presentWhy does exercise reduce stress? A run or a cold plunge demands so much attention that the mind cannot stay in the past or future. The relief is borrowed.

The practice. Notice the state before the story: the chest, the breath, the restless attention. Then one thing you can feel right now. Calm is returned to, not held.
