Practice

Recognising a thought is not the same as rejecting it

The most common mistake people make when they start noticing their own thinking is to treat recognition as a verdict. They spot a thought, decide it is bad, and turn against it. This replaces one difficult thought with three, and it is why so many people experience mental training as a fight they are losing.

The short version

  • Recognising a thought and rejecting it are different acts
  • Rejection produces new poisonous thoughts about the original one
  • You cannot remove poison with more poison
  • The practice is recognise, understand, return - with no drama
  • If it feels like a battle, you have misunderstood it

The mattress

You are in bed. The bed is fine. A thought arrives: it would be wonderful to sleep on one of those memory foam mattresses.

You notice it, and you are right to. That is Future + Likes - imagining and wanting a circumstance different from the one you are in. The recognition is correct.

Here is where it goes wrong. Having recognised it, many people believe the next move is to disapprove. I should not want a better mattress. I should be grateful. I should want to sleep on the floor and be done with wanting anything.

Look at what has just been produced.

I should not have had that thought is Past + Dislikes. I hate that I am so materialistic is Present + Dislikes. I will force myself to sleep on the floor is Future + Dislikes.

One thought about a mattress has become four, and three of them are heavier than the original. Nothing has been removed. The person is further from where they started and now also believes they are failing at the practice.

The PAHM matrixA three by three grid. Time runs across as Past, Present and Future. Emotional charge runs down as Likes, Neutral and Dislikes. Present and Neutral, the stable centre, is marked. The remaining positions are shown plainly, with no emphasis.PASTPRESENTFUTURELIKESNEUTRALDISLIKESPast+ LikesPast+ NeutralPast+ DislikesPresent+ LikesPresent+ NeutralPresent+ DislikesFuture+ LikesFuture+ NeutralFuture+ Dislikes

Why rejection cannot work

You cannot eliminate poison with more poison. Producing an opposite thought is still operating inside the same system - still past or future, still liking or disliking, only pointed the other way.

Present + Neutral is not the opposite of desire. It is the absence of movement in any direction. Wanting a mattress and forcing yourself not to want one are both movements. The second is more strenuous and no closer to stillness.

This is also why the practice should feel like relief rather than effort. If you find yourself building rules about what you are allowed to think, feeling guilty about ordinary mental movements, or fighting a running battle with your own mind, something has been misread. Recognition is gentle. It has to be, or it becomes the thing it was meant to notice.

What the correct move looks like

Four steps, and none of them are strenuous.

Recognition. This is Future + Likes - imagining a different circumstance.

Understanding. If I follow this, it will produce dissatisfaction with the bed I am actually in.

Non-engagement. Note it. Do not follow it. Do not reject it. Do not generate a second thought about having had it.

Natural return. Let attention come back to what is actually happening, without force.

The thought is neither indulged nor fought. It is seen for what it is - a movement away from where you are - and allowed to pass.

Indulgence, aversion, recognition

Three responses, and only the third one is the practice.

Indulgence is following the thought. Elaborating. Researching mattresses. Feeling dissatisfied with your bed. Buying something on the strength of a passing want.

Aversion is hating the thought. Suppressing it. Generating the opposite. Feeling guilty for having had it. Forcing yourself into an austerity nobody asked for.

Recognition is noting it, understanding what it does, and returning - without drama.

The same three apply to every poisonous position.

I wish I had more money. Wrong response: I should not want money, wanting money is bad, I should give mine away. Right response: that is Future + Likes, it produces dissatisfaction, return.

I am worried about tomorrow's meeting. Wrong response: I should not worry, worry is weakness, I will force myself to think positively. Right response: that is Future + Dislikes, it produces anxiety, return.

I regret what I said yesterday. Wrong response: I should stop dwelling, I am stupid for still thinking about this. Right response: that is Past + Dislikes, it produces guilt, return.

Same shape every time. Recognise, understand, return, without adding thoughts about the thoughts.

But then how do I decide anything?

A fair objection. If you do not engage with the thought about the mattress, how does a mattress ever get bought?

Practical decisions get made from Present + Neutral, when they are actually needed. If your bed is causing back pain, you can research one and buy it without any of that being driven by a chain reaction.

The difference is the source. Lying in an adequate bed, imagining a better one, becoming dissatisfied, elaborating, and buying on the strength of a mood - that is one thing. Noticing genuine physical discomfort, looking into solutions when appropriate, and deciding on the basis of need - that is another. The first manufactures the problem it then solves. The second addresses something that was already there.

The freedom in it

Understanding that recognition is not rejection removes a burden most people did not know they had picked up.

You do not have to become someone who never wants anything. You do not have to police your preferences, justify your desires, or manufacture an austerity you never chose. You are not trying to be a different person. You are learning to notice when attention has moved somewhere that produces disturbance, and letting it come back.

The thought about the mattress is not a problem. Following it into dissatisfaction is a problem. Hating yourself for having it is also a problem. Seeing it and returning is neither - it is just clear sight.

Common questions

How do I know if I am rejecting rather than recognising?

By the temperature. Recognition is flat and quick. If there is heat in it - irritation, guilt, a sense of having failed - that is a second thought about the first, and it belongs to a different tile.

Is this a coping mechanism?

Most coping mechanisms manage a feeling once it has arrived. This works earlier, on the identification that produces the feeling, which is why it does not feel like coping while you are doing it.

What if the thought keeps coming back?

It will. The patterns are long established and recognising them once does not dissolve them. Each return is another opportunity, not evidence that it is not working.

Is this the same as accepting the thought?

Not quite. Acceptance can shade into indulgence - settling in with the thought and letting it run. Recognition sees the thought clearly and does not follow it. Neither pushing away nor moving in.

What about intrusive thoughts?

The same rule holds and matters more, because unwanted thoughts invite rejection most strongly. Turning on an intrusive thought gives it weight. Recognising it without engaging gives it none.

Does this apply to pleasant thoughts too?

Yes, and that is the part most people miss. Rejecting a pleasant thought is just as much a mistake as indulging it. The response to joy is the same as the response to worry: see it, do not build on it, return.
